Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 7
Usually, students think baseball is fun, but math...not so much. Making stats fun, simple, and exciting for baseball fans is an excellent way to add another layer of understanding and enjoyment of the game.

In this class, students learn not just the arithmetic of baseball, but the reasoning behind why these numbers are important and how and why they came to be used in the first place.

In this six-part course, student will be introduced to:

Class #1 - Batting stats - We'll learn about (and how to calculate) batting average, hits, runs, RBI, sacrifices, on-base percentage and many more.

Class #2 - Pitching stats - ERA, wins, losses, saves, WHIP, and some standard fielding statistics.

Class #3 - Season vs. career stats - How are they different, milestones from each, and some history of the franchises involved.

Class #4 - Awards and honors - Discussion of MVP, Gold Gloves, Cy Young, Silver Slugger, ROTY, Hall of Fame voting and more.

Class #5 - Team stats - How to calculate team stats versus individual players, and how the two are different. Runs scored/allowed, W-L records, all-time franchise records, and how differing ballparks affect statistics.

Class #6 - Changes in stats over time - How changes in the major leagues have affected statistics and the legacy of past players.

Along the way, students will learn about some excellent resources for baseball statistics and history, trivia, anecdotes, and much more.

Hello and welcome!

My name is Benjamin Edwards, and I love to teach.
I have a bachelor's degree in history with a minor in education. I worked for eleven years with children ages 3-16 at a recreation center and YMCA in my hometown. I then taught for three years in middle and high schools. I've spent the last four years teaching online to students worldwide. I work best with students in the 9-18 age range.

While I have many interests that I enjoy sharing with my students - American pop culture, music of the 1980s, 20th century films, reading the classics, teaching guitar, playing chess -
my passion is HISTORY. I live to share my knowledge of the past, its role in shaping modern culture, and the challenge of bringing the people and places back to life in the mind of a student.

I believe that the student should not just learn the material, but begin to love to learn the material, looking forward to each class and leaving them wanting to learn more on their own about the subject after class has ended. I believe that one of the essentials of a great teacher is connecting the past to the present in the lives of their students.

My courses will consist of short lectures, often containing video/audio clips, followed by student discussion and analysis.

I'm excited about the opportunity to share my knowledge, and I look forward to meeting your child and beginning an educational adventure together!
