Class Experience

This reading and spelling course uses the Barton Reading and Spelling System, a researched and multi-sensory approach specifically designed for individuals struggling with reading and spelling, particularly those with dyslexia. It employs a systematic and cumulative methodology with direct and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, phonics, and spelling.

The Barton Reading & Spelling System is Orton-Gillingham influenced. It embraces a multi-sensory approach that is highly effective for individuals of all ages who face challenges in reading and spelling. The approach is backed by the latest scientific research and is recommended by the International Dyslexia Association.

The program consists of ten levels, each serving as a prerequisite for the subsequent levels. The ten levels of the Barton Reading and Spelling System are as follows:
- Level 1: phonemic awareness
- Level 2: consonants and short vowels
- Level 3: closed and unit syllables
- Level 4: multi-syllable words and vowel teams
- Level 5: prefixes and suffixes
- Level 6: six reasons for silent e
- Level 7: vowel r’s
- Level 8: advanced vowel teams
- Level 9: influences of foreign languages
- Level 10: Latin roots and Greek combining forms

Each level comprises multiple lessons, and a post-assessment is administered after each level to ensure mastery of the material. Advancement to the next level is based on achieving a passing score on the post-assessment.

Important information to note:
-This program is a comprehensive reading and spelling program that can take a few years to complete. It is concept-based rather than grade-level-based.

- A regular laptop or desktop computer is required for the course, as tablets and Chromebooks are not compatible with the control tools used.

- A webcam and a headset with a microphone are necessary for the interactive nature of the course.

- Basic knowledge of using a mouse and keyboard is required, but the student does not need to be proficient at typing.
Learning Goals
1) Fluency: Students will improve reading fluency through repeated practice and multi-sensory activities.

Learning Needs
This program was designed for dyslexia or struggling readers, using the Orton-Gillingham approach. It includes systematic and explicit instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, reading fluency, and spelling.
Supply List
(1) A regular laptop or desktop computer is needed. iPads (or other tablets) and Google Chromebooks will not work well for the mouse/keyboard control tools used in this class.

(2) A mouse for manipulating onscreen tiles or a touchscreen computer is needed for this course.

(3) A headset with a microphone on the headphones (not the cord) is highly recommended and preferred so that both the student and the teacher can hear the sounds the other makes clearly and precisely.

(4) This class is very interactive. Your student will do most of the work via a mouse or keyboard. The student should have basic knowledge of how to use a mouse (drag and drop) and a keyboard. The student does not need to be proficient at typing. The hunt-and-peck approach works fine, but the student should know the basics, like how to hit enter, create capital letters, and insert punctuation.
