Class Experience

This course is for students who know all of the alphabet letters, short vowel sounds, and the digraphs, but struggle with reading fluency, spelling, and/or writing. (Please see the note at the bottom if your student has Dyslexia, Specific Reading Disabilities, or you suspect Dyslexia, as those student should have private lessons instead.) Students should be able to read CVC words and short sentences independently. In the class, the students will manipulate letter tiles to build the words, read the words, and also write the words, phrases, and sentences. Students will also learn to mark sentences into parts (subject, verb, prepositional phrases, etc.) They will learn tricks to remember tricky sight words and each student created their own sight word deck to review at home. There are also games that the students play to reinforce the learning. You can see exactly how a Barton Reading & Spelling lesson works in the step by step list below.
A. Quick review of prior lesson.
B. Phonemic awareness warmup.
C. Teach new skill or rule, in color.
D. Read & spell real words using new skill or rule, in color.
E. Read & spell nonsense words using new skill or rule, in color.
F. Read & spell both real and nonsense words, on paper, in black and white.
G. Read & spell phrases on paper, in black and white for fluency as well as accuracy.
H. Read & spell sentences on paper, in black and white for fluency, accuracy, and phrasing.
I. Read controlled-text stories on paper, in black and white, for fluency, accuracy, and phrasing. Also to check for comprehension.
J. Extra practice pages can be done as seatwork or sent home.

*** NOTE: If you suspect your student has Dyslexia or your student has been diagnosed with Dyslexia, please message me about my private tutoring courses instead. This course does not move at the student's pacing like in private lessons. Instead, a lesson is presented each week. Students with Dyslexia or Specific Reading Disabilities, would need more time to work through each lesson in book 3.

Other Details

Supply List
Learners will need to use a laptop or computer with a mouse. If one is not available, they can use paper and pen or dry erase board and marker. They will need a spiral notebook or composition book to create their spelling notebook. It is also helpful to have a dry erase board and marker to use in the class. Chromebooks and iPads will not allow remote sharing so students on these devices will not be able to play the in class games.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
