A very interactive virtual exploration of life in my barnyard. We will spend 10 minutes discussing each of the following: - If it doesn't fly is it still a bird? Chickens, quail, a fledgling songbird, and ducks will provide the perfect real-life specimens. - How do bacteria help the barnyard? The compost pile, the barnyard floor, and the animal's stomachs will provide great discussion. - Why are some animals called ruminants? My five goats reveal their ruminating ways. - Who wears fur? Using my angora rabbits, we'll learn about useful lagomorphs (huh?). - What's buggy about insects? We'll inspect the bees, ants, mealworms, and any other insects that cross our path. The remaining 10 minutes will be used for introductions and good-byes, respectively. There is no homework, but in the section, I will add optional activities and reading for those who wish to practice, reflect, or learn more.
Learning Goals
Students will:
1. be introduced to the basic idea of taxonomy as we categorize the organisms: bacteria, insects, birds, ruminants, and lagomorphs
2. compare and contrast
3. recognize the value of both large and small life forms within an environment
4. learn terms: environment, symbiosis, social, and incubate
5. observe behaviors such as submission, dominance, affection, preening, etc.
6. discuss processes such as ruminate, gnaw, metamorphosis, incubate, gestation, fermentation
After participating in this class, I hope students will use some of the terms, share what they witnessed, ask questions, appreciate the wonders of life, and seek more information.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, I love learning! I hope you do too because the world is filled with fascinating things, people, places, and ideas. One life is hardly long enough to explore it all. I've been teaching for 23 years, but I've been a student for ... well, more than twice that long.
Recently, my suburbanite family and I moved to a 2.5-acre hobby farm. It is pure delight! I want to share this lovely, lively - slightly looney, place with you through a series of classes each designed for specific ages and interests. From the basics of taxonomy to the complexities of genetics, I hope learners will enjoy the virtual tours, snuggles, romps, and dramas of barnyard life.
Caution: Our animals are very friendly, a little crazy, and life here is never dull.
Oh, and aside from science & nature, I also teach History, Anthropology, Social Studies, Civics, Economics, ESL, Grammar, Writing, Public Speaking, and World Religions.
