This class combines the grace and beauty of ballet with the rhythms and excitement of tap dance. Fun, age-appropriate, and structured for beginning to intermediate dancers. The class will include a warm-up and technique in both ballet and tap dance, creative movement activities, and learning a new dance routine each week. Class structure: - Introduction and welcome - Tap Warm-up Exercises - Tap Technique - Social Time while changing shoes - Ballet Warm-up Exercises - Stretches - Ballet Technique - Routine of the Week, with video and short discussion - Creative Movement Activity - Cool Down and Reverence We use the Al Gilbert Tap Syllabus. From SchoolworkHelper.net: "The Gilbert Syllabus has many merits as a teaching and learning tool. Because of the wide range of levels, it can be taught to any age category and any ability level. The syllabus is designed to accommodate the enthusiasm, as well as the lack of attention span of small children. It accommodates the growing skill and maturity of older children, and can even be used to teach beginning adults and senior citizens, because of its straightforward, un-biased manner...From Primary to Grade Eight, each level builds on knowledge and technique from the previous levels, while remaining a separate and complete entity. In Primary, exercises introduce basic steps such as shuffle, hop, toe back, step, ballchange, dig and marches. These elements are done slowly, with many holds. This allows beginning dancers to carefully execute new movements, and gives them the opportunity to concentrate, between each movement. The slow tempo also helps young dancers who have not developed acute fine motor skills. In Tap 1, students review many exercises from Primary. The new exercises introduce elements such as the Irish, jump, gallop, balancé, and buffalo." Ballet Steps learned include, but are not limited to: Plié, Tendu, Rond de Jambe, Soussus, Arabesque, Grand Battement, Balancé, Piqué, and various jumps, used alone and in combination. These steps will be incorporated each week, and/or additional steps added, depending on the level of the dancers. We will learn a short routine, alternating each week between ballet and tap. There will be a video shared, highlighting Dance History, Performance, or Emotional Expression, with a short discussion, and application to the choreography.
