Class experience
If you have a young dancer at home who can't get enough of ballet then this is the book club for them! In this one hour session we will sit down together to read the story of Peter Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. After story time, dancers will get to hear the history of this holiday favorite ballet starting with its premiere in Russia in 1892 up to today, where they will get to see clips from productions all around the world. By the end of this class, learners will know the story, characters, and history of the Nutcracker ballet. They will be exposed to the different ways this story has been told across the years and across the many different companies who have performed this ballet. They will also be able to identify iconic costumes, musical phrases, and choreography.
I have been dancing since I was three years old and have performed across the US and Canada in 5 national tours and at 2 theme parks. Most recently, I passed my Royal Academy of Dance Advanced Foundation exam in 2019. I have been teaching dance since 2012 and have taught students of all ages and abilities. I am very knowledgeable and passionate about sharing the history and repertoire of ballet with young dancers.
1 file available upon enrollmentLearners should print out a copy of the coloring page activity and bring drawing tools of some kind (crayons, colored pencils, markers) as our final activity will be for dancers to design their own interpretation of Clara's costume.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
We will be reading "The Nutcracker" from the Illustrated Book of Ballet Stories by Barbara Newman. We will be watching clips from different productions of the Nutcracker including The Royal Ballet, The Bolshoi Ballet, The Australian Ballet, and The New National Theatre Tokyo.
