Ballet 101: Ballet for Beginners Ages 8-11
Class experience
This is an eight week introduction to ballet for the true beginner. Students will learn foundational ballet exercises, in addition to exploring dance etiquette and history. As the study of ballet requires repetition of the exercises with increasing expectations, dancers with no prior experience or less than one year of dance experience will be well suited by this class. Dancers with no prior experience should begin the first four classes in center floor. Dancers with limited experience may...
Students will be offered a high-level introduction to the most basic principles and exercises in classical ballet.
With over 30 years of dance experience, Ms. Anne brings a depth of knowledge of many different genres of dance. Ms. Anne performed professionally in a multi-disciplinary dance company. She has taught ballroom, tap, jazz, and theatre, in addition to classical and contemporary ballet. Her students have won awards with her choreography at many prestigious dance competitions, including Youth America Grand Prix. Some of Ms. Anne's graduate research interests included studying the development of artistry in dancers and using artistic talents to develop a business model.
Please come to class from a safe space clear of any obstacles. It is best to not take class on carpet, as toes may stick and injury may occur even when wearing socks or ballet shoes. Ideally, dancers will attend class from an area with a hard floor and ballet shoes so as to limit injury. Hard floors with bare feet may also be acceptable, but dancers will need to exercise care to prevent injury. Class attire should be form-fitting so that the teacher can correct placement, but clothing should not restrict movement. Leggings and a tank top work well if you don't feel ready to purchase dance attire! If you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to ask!
As ballet is a physical activity in addition to an art, adults should be nearby to supervise class completion in a safe area. While the instructor will take all reasonable measures to explain how to safely execute each exercise, this is an online course and it will require some adult supervision to minimize risk to the dancer.
