We are going to use some fresh seasonal fruit—strawberries to make a super sweet summer treat! Students will learn to measure dry and liquid ingredients step by step as we make the recipe together. Student will learn safety as far as using knives and kitchen utensils. I will post the strawberry shortcake recipe as well as cooking tools needed on the classroom page at least three days before class so you will have time to gather ingredients! Students will learn kitchen utensil and oven safety as well as measure dry and wet ingredients! Students will be able to learn how to make fresh strawberry short cake to share with family and friends.
No homework, but optional extension could be to write about this experience, create a presentation of how to make strawberry shortcake others to practice presentation and speaking skills. Students could also reflect on process and self-evaluate the different skills needed.
Here is the list of ingredients for our recipe. *******(Please prepare the berries before class as this is the most time consuming) Stem 4 cups of berries and slice or chopped. Ingredients needed for recipe: Berries: 4 cups of berries (stems off and sliced or chopped) 1/3 cup of sugar Shortcakes: 2 cups of all purpose flour 3 Tbsp of sugar 1 Tbsp baking powder 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1/4 cup of COLD butter cut into small cubes 1 cup of milk 1 tsp vanilla Whipped Cream: 1 cup of whipping cream 2 teaspoons of sugar Students will also need dry and liquid measuring cups, measuring spoons, a medium to large mixing bowl, and a bowl for the berries. They will also need a butter knife, a mixing spoon and couple of forks for mixing in the butter. I will mix everything but the whipped cream by hand since the key to a fluffy shortcake is not over-mixing the dough. I typically use a spatula for this, but any wooden mixing spoon will work just fine. Students will also need a cooking sheet. I will be using a hand mixer for the whipping cream for convenience and easy clean up, but a stand mixer will work too.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Students will receive feedback on how they are doing throughout the class and be able to ask questions! They can share their experience with other students in the class.
40 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Adult supervision should be nearby to assist and ensure safety of students!
