In this class students will first make a pie crust out of graham crackers, butter and sugar. Secondly they will make the key lime filling for the pie. While the pie is baking they will be guided to make the merengue top. Class will end while the whole pie is baking for another 12-15min in the oven. I like to encourage kids to feel confident and free in the kitchen while making yummy foods that they like. I want them to know that they don't always need to follow recipes and that they don't...
Crust: - graham crackers - sugar - butter Filling: - 1/2 cup key lime juice (fresh) - 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream - 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk - 2 teaspoons lime zest - 5 egg yolks Merengue Top: - 4 egg whites (take the ones from the eggs (yolks) we used for the filling) - sugar - cornstarch - salt Utensils: - grater/zester - lime squeezer/juicer - mixer - bowl - pie pan - oven
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
