Class Experience
In this 8-week course we will read through Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (reading will be completed outside of class), and come together to discuss the book. We'll share our ideas about the characters and the story, and examine how they continue to inspire us today. We will further bring the book alive as we bake dishes, inspired from the pages of the novel, each week in class together. We will structure our reading and baking as follows... Week 1- Chapters 1-5 Recipe: Sugar Plums and...
Learners will need to read the assigned chapters each week to be prepared for discussion as we bake.
Below are the ingredients and materials needed throughout the course. (Each week our recipes will be shared in the classroom for the next week's bake). Ingredients: all-purpose flour sugar brown sugar powdered sugar butter milk oil (canola, vegetable, etc) eggs salt kosher salt baking soda baking powder cream cheese sour cream cinnamon ginger (fresh or spice) nutmeg allspice cloves limes lime juice lemon juice lemon extract or zest heavy whipping cream peppermint extract cocoa powder vanilla extract chocolate chips 1 refrigerated box of puff pastry or pie dough apples or pie filling fruit of your choice old-fashioned oats/or shredded coconut/ or nuts of your choice dried fruit of your choice fresh or frozen berries of your choice molasses cooking spray ice optional: peppermint candy, sprinkles, green and red food coloring.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Parents need to be aware of allergens in the ingredients that may affect their child. Additionally, parents will need to provide guidance for all portions of baking that involve heat and/or cutting ingredients. Additional guidance will be needed by each family, to decide how best to support their baker in the kitchen.
