Class Experience

Let's get bready to crumble!! Each week we will explore the techniques, science, and history of different baked goods as we bake our own tasty treats. How does laminating dough work? What economic era is responsible for the creation of the carrot cake? What's the difference between mixing and folding? Learn the answer to these questions and more while you bake your own creations.

Humans have been baking for thousands of years, all over the world, and in this class, your kitchen is your time machine and passport all rolled into one! Ingredient and supply lists will be posted one week in advance of every class ensuring Learners and families have the opportunity to gather the required materials. Each week will begin with a discussion of techniques used in our recipe, the origin of the recipe, and the science behind the recipe. Learners will have the opportunity to ask questions and make observations throughout the course, as well as suggest future baked goods! If a Learner is unable to bake that day (whether because of supplies, location, other unforeseen circumstances) they are welcome to join the discussion and watch so long as they remain productive to the meaning of the course and cooperative with their fellow Learners. General knowledge of one's own kitchen and tools is recommended, however, we will emphasize safety as well as basic kitchen skills in every class.

This class is inclusive, which means Learners of all abilities and backgrounds are welcome. Together we work to build an inclusive environment that encourages, supports, and celebrates our diverse voices. We share and respect pronouns, we support each other's Learning differences, and we create a safe space for all Learners. If you need any accommodations please let me know and we will work together to ensure that they have the best possible class experience.

Learning Goals

Learners will gain knowledge in fractions, adding, subtraction, and other basic math skills involved in baking. They will also learn the history and cultural studies relating to the baked goods. Teacher expertise and credentials
I am an avid self-taught baker who started baking cakes as soon as I could reach the handle to the oven door. I worked briefly in a commercial kitchen, and though my career diverted away from baking full time I still love sharpening my skills and baking creative concoctions for my loved ones.
