In this literature study of "Bad Kitty Meets the Baby" by Nick Bruel, students will read the chapter book, have discussion with peers and do activities to improve reading fluency and comprehension. Class Structure: In each class, we will read 2 chapters. Discussion will follow each chapter. Discussion will center on connections (self, text, world), possible themes in the story, and opinions. Skill work is included in each lesson. Doing worksheets is NOT the focus of the class but we will use some printable sheets to use as a guide for the targeted skills for that lesson. I will ask for volunteers to read during the class but it is not required. Topics covered: Text to self, text to text, and text to world connections Recalling details Character traits (site with text evidence) Predictions Plot Problem Solving Sequence of events Cause and effect Prior knowledge/experience: The reading level for Bad Kitty Meets the Baby is: 720L DRA 38 This puts the book at an upper 2nd to 4th grade level. Please keep this in mind when registering for the class. IMPORTANT NOTE: I highly recommend purchasing the book for this class.
Learning Goals
Students will hone vocabulary and comprehension skills, increase reading fluency and have fun reading this book. Students will use appropriate discussion skills to evaluate the book while expressing opinions about their likes and dislikes.

The book may also be available through digital libraries and can be checked out at no cost. I will supply PDF copies of any worksheets or other resources we use in class.

Hello! My name is Beth Price and I am a certified teacher for grades Kindergarten through 3rd. I have taught students for over 20 years in a preschool setting, Kindergarten, 1st grade and online ESL classes. I have also home-schooled two of my children in their middle school and high school years.
I enjoy teaching all subjects but my passion is teaching Language Arts, Social Studies and Science. I believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged in a lesson--moving, singing, and participating!
