Backyard STEM and Science: Let's Explore Together

US Grade 2 - 4
This weekly, on-going class will allow learners to engage in Science and STEM activities related to nature. Learners are encouraged to participate in classes outside in their own backyards. A backyard could be a small or large grassy space, porch, deck, sunroom, Florida Room, portico, patio or even indoors. I hold a Bachelor and Master's Degree and am certified to teach by the state of Georgia. I have a science endorsement on my current and valid teaching certificate. I am STEM certified by the state of Georgia and hold certification from the Buck Institute in PBL/STEM. I developed the STEM program at my local elementary school where I was the STEM Specials teacher for grades K-5. I lead Summer STEM camps at Georgia Tech University for students in grades 3-8. I have completed the Project Learning Tree certification. I incorporate outside learning and gardening lessons in my classes on a regular basis.

Authentic and on-going assessment will be provided to learners in class. The teacher will provide additional assessment upon request of the learner's adults.Grades Offered
Weekly updates will be provided one week in advance of each on-going class. Suggested materials will be listed in each update. Alternative ideas and material suggestions will be offered as needed. Consider the following materials to have on hand as standards for this class: -Access to an outside space (yard, patio, garden, deck, sunroom, porch, etc.). If outside space is not possible due to location or weather I will provide suggestions as to how activities can be completed inside. -Magnifying glasses/hand lenses -Small containers with lids. -Hand shovel or trowel. -Soil/sand -Seeds and beans -Binoculars -Tennis shoes or other closed toe shoes (for safety). -Science/safety goggles -Notebook/writing tools. -White board/white board markers.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
It is recommended that learners wear tennis shoes (sneakers) or other closed toe shoes while attending this class. Sunscreen should be applied prior to class. Learners should have access to drinking water throughout class. Hats and sunglasses can be worn as needed. Safety/science goggles should be available and worn during classes where turning soil or other soil/sand work is completed. One week notice will be provided prior to classes where goggles are needed.
