Class Experience

How lives behind the blue house on Hollow Tree Lane?
In this one-time class we will help a cute chipmunk prepare for winter hibernation. Your student will listen to excerpts from the story "Chipmunk on Hollow Tree Lane" from the Smithsonian's Backyard series.

First we will learn about identifying chipmunks. Then we will read about chipmunks and will play "I Spy" with nature illustrations.
Your student will learn the vocabulary words; chipmunk, burrow, acorn, pouch, and hibernation.

We will identify the follow plants and animals that live in the backyard of the blue house on Hollow Tree Lane; chipmunk, daisies, viburnum berries, acorns, sunflower seeds, the American toad, crows, and wild strawberries.

After learning about chipmunks we will help chipmunk finish her autumn preparations for her long winter nap or "hibernation" by preparing a virtual burrow as a class. Students will choose soft nesting materials for chipmunk to snuggle up in and delicious snacks for chipmunk to enjoy during her hibernation.

Learning Goals

Students will learn about chipmunks, burrows, hibernation, and will identify multiple plant/animals.
