Class Experience

In 90 minutes, we will cover backpacking basics and students will build the confidence they need to spend a night in the woods. Topics will include planning your first trip (aka your shakedown), gear basics, what to pack, how to pack, setting up camp, basic safety, and leave no trace principles.

Even more than the gear and planning, confidence is a key ingredient. We will begin and end our class with a confidence building exercise. We will review my camping and backpacking gear, play a virtual gear game, and students will pack a virtual backpack for my next trip!

Why is this a GIRLS ONLY course? Girls and women have unique challenges in the woods that most teen girls don't want to discuss with their male peers. We really do need to talk about toileting in the woods, including hygiene, washing and hanging our delicates, and changing clothes in the great outdoors.

This class will have a short 5 minute break in the middle.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to confidently plan and execute a night in the woods.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
We will discuss issues of toileting in the woods, mentioning our unmentionables, hygiene, and ideas of modesty. These are facts of life and we need to be okay talking about them if we're going to go off in to the woods and experience them. Knowing that you're not alone can do a world of good in building confidence and working towards independence.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

I am a mother and one of my main goals is raising confident, independent, and strong young women. My girls know how to use power tools, they can backpack, and they can plan and execute trips with ease. As an educator, I see how these life skills translate into success; academically, athletically, and socially.

Personally, I have backpacked in the Cascade mountains, Michigan's UP, and the Appalachians. I have road-tripped, camped, and hiked in nearly every state in the US; either solo or with my children.
