There is an exit ticket at the end, and I informally keep track of student responses throughout the lesson on different questions to cater my teaching to learner needs.

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 4
A live, one time class with a certified math teacher! This class dives deep into addition strategies, connecting them to toads and the importance of this amphibian in nature. Bring awareness of math into the garden, intertwining learning into the natural setting! Students will design a Toad Abode (Toad House) for the garden, understanding the importance of toads, and addition strategies will be naturally interwoven into the lesson! Having a solid understanding of our place value system will lend itself to students gaining deeper comprehension of addition and subtraction strategies as well as help them solve mental math problems.

The learning outcomes for this class are:
 1. I can add and subtract within 1000. (3.NBT.A.2)
2. I can solve addition problems using two strategies. (1.OA.C.6)

This class will have minimal math equations completed, but will focus on multiple strategies or ways to solve the equations related to toads.

The class is structured around the math concept being introduced with toad facts and information. Students will engage with each other and try new strategies throughout the lesson, which is guided by engaging powerpoint slides. My teaching style is to guide discussions and model different activities, but to get students talking, reflecting, and thinking as much as possible. This is where true learning takes place!

No prior understanding of addition is required.
Learning Goals
The learning outcomes for this class are:
1. I can add within 1000. (3.NBT.A.2- Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.)
2. I can solve addition problems using two strategies. (1.OA.C.6- Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8+6= 8+2+4= 10+4=14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13-4= 13-3-1=10-1=9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8+4= 12, one knows that 12-8= 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6+7 by creating the known equivalent 6+6+1= 12+1= 13). )
