Back to School: Toad Abode + Addition Strategies with a Certified Math Teacher
Class experience
US Grade 3 - 4
A live, one time class with a certified math teacher! This class dives deep into addition strategies, connecting them to toads and the importance of this amphibian in nature. Bring awareness of math into the garden, intertwining learning into the natural setting! Students will design a Toad Abode (Toad House) for the garden, understanding the importance of toads, and addition strategies will be naturally interwoven into the lesson! Having a solid understanding of our place value system will...
The learning outcomes for this class are: 1. I can add within 1000. (3.NBT.A.2- Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.) 2. I can solve addition problems using two strategies. (1.OA.C.6- Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8+6= 8+2+4= 10+4=14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13-4= 13-3-1=10-1=9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8+4= 12, one knows that 12-8= 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6+7 by creating the known equivalent 6+6+1= 12+1= 13). )
I hold a standard teaching license for K-6 elementary education, with three years of experience teaching math to students who needed extra support with foundational skills. I have taught for five years in public schools and two years homeschooling a family member in middle school.
