Back-to-School Spruce-Up: Reading & Writing about Nonfiction

"Spruce Up" your reading comprehension skills just in time for the new school year! In this five-session course, students will practice critical reading skills for nonfiction. Learners will express their understanding of text by writing short-answer responses, answering multiple-choice questions, and supporting their answers with evidence, just like they will need to do in their actual classrooms and on those pesky fall standardized tests. Week 1: What's the Big Idea? Students will review...
1. Identify main idea and key details of science and social studies nonfiction texts. 2. Compose paragraphs in response to text that include a topic sentence; evidence from the text; elaboration; transitions; and a concluding sentence. 3. Support ideas with evidence. 4. Select correct answers to questions about text from multiple choices. 5. Determine meaning of new words using context clues. 6. Compare and Contrast ideas presented in nonfiction text. 7. Explain a scientific problem and its possible solutions. 8. Use visual aids in nonfiction texts to encourage understanding of passages as a whole.

Homework Offered
Students should finish any work not completed during sessions. Also, students will be given an optional writing assessment on the last day to complete independently.
