35 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
The student will be sent a simple drawing ahead of class to either draw or trace onto watercolor paper. (As this can take a few minutes, it leaves us the entire class time to paint.) We will load up our palette with small amounts of the colors the student has chosen (4 colors + black and a larger amount of white). The student will learn a very loose style of painting with short strokes, using a flat 1/2" paint brush, and mixing paint right on the paper with every few strokes. I will be demonstrating and encouraging the students to find their own 'style' and enjoy the creativity of painting in a more abstract style. We will build 'texture' on our painting by dipping our paint brush into different colors and mixing them right on the painting, building up layers of wonderful colors and creating depth by adding more or less white to each color. In my "Art2Learn" classes, I share other information with the students and include other disciplines. In this class, students will learn some facts about the baby giraffe and I will show the students where these animals live in the world, on a map or globe. I enjoy a more relaxed classroom where students are encouraged to ask questions, and where they can continue working while I share other information about the topic of our painting. (Being a kinesthetic/visual learner myself, I absorb information much more easily if my hands stay busy). In the last few minutes, students can choose to hold up and share their creations, but this is optional. Students may or may not finish their paintings in class and may choose to continue them outside of class. ------------------------------------------------ **BASIC CLASS NOTES** (Please read) I begin on time. If a student is late, they will need to jump in and catch up as they are able. I cannot re-start the class for each late arrival. You may request a recording of the class if child arrives late or ends up being unable to attend. {If a PAINTING class has a drawing or element to print out and trace, please have this done BEFORE the start of class (it will be posted in the classroom several hours before start of class). For these classes, we will not be taking the time to draw that element in class, but will begin with painting our piece, so the student will be woefully behind and unable to get the painting instruction needed if not done before class. They are welcome to draw their own version of what I post, but need to do so before start of that class as we will begin painting when class begins.} I encourage creativity and self-expression. Students may veer from what I am doing to find their own 'voice'. Also, I encourage interaction during class (please be polite by sharing talk time and muting when there is background noise in the home). Otherwise, I welcome questions as we go along and open mics. If your student enjoys this art time and would like to attend my art clubs, please look for these on Outschool or message me for times that might suit better, now that school has begun. I soooo look forward to seeing your child in class.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a full time Gig/LIVE Caricature Artist for weddings, corporate events, parties, etc. and while that is my “bread & butter”, I love teaching what I’ve learned to kids on Outschool.
I have an education degree and many years of experience teaching and creating art, from fine art to crafty projects, from artful home projects to designing and painting theatre sets for plays and musicals on the stage.
I love to teach children the value of creating art that is a personal and meaningful expression of themselves, helping them loosen up and enjoy the process, the missteps and the "That's good enough to sell!" moments. LOL.
Open mics and sharing are encouraged.
I teach from my whimsical art studio in North Carolina and hope to see your child in a class soon. ~Penny
** Look for CARICATURE ART CAMPS coming up this summer. Each week, we will learn a new technique and enjoy working on our projects together in class. Three and 5-day camps will be available.
