Class Experience

In this ongoing class, we will visit a different country (or region) each week and learn about several key animal species that can be found in that country. We will do a quick overview of the climate and geography of the country so that we can understand what adaptations are important for animals to thrive in the area. The animals will be chosen for a variety of reasons: endemic species, national animals, unique features and more.

This class is presented using a slideshow, and learners are encouraged to discuss the animals throughout.

The schedule is provided below. This schedule may change, as I welcome learner suggestions about which animals we learn about.

Week of October 16: Ecuador
Week of October 23: China
Week of October 30: Kenya
Week of November 6: Sweden
Week of November 13: Canada
Learning Goals
Learners will develop an appreciation for the biodiversity of our planet and will begin to understand how different geographic and climatic features influence the animal life in an area.

Hello Families!

My name is Jennifer and I taught my first class for Outschool in March, 2021. From that first class to the present, I have been so happy to teach such diverse, curious, imaginative, and AMAZING learners! I look forward to working with all of the learners who enroll in my classes.

When I am not teaching on Outschool, I homeschool my four busy children! In our home, we are crazy about science, nature, animals, Pokemon, Minecraft, playing board games and more! My kids also love connecting with other learners in a variety of Outschool classes. I come to homeschooling from a professional teaching background, and I have classroom experience in all elementary grades. Most of my experience came in middle grade math and science, and I love math and science still! I have a Bachelor of Education degree, with qualifications for both elementary and high school, and teachable subjects in math and science. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a psychology minor (with a focus on children’s psychology). The last 15 years of my life have been all about teaching - in the classroom, online, and in our homeschool!

As well as classroom teaching, I have tutored math (grades 5- adult), volunteered as a storyteller with the local library, been a Girl Guides Leader, taught Junior Achievement classes, and worked as a nanny and a babysitter. Our family is involved in a homeschool co-op where I have shared in teaching many homeschooled kids.

One of my favourite discoveries about homeschooling has been how exciting it is for ME to learn new things right along with my children! I love to follow my children’s interests, and so over the years I have learned about harbour seals, baseball history, cardboard engineering, bridges, ancient Egypt, ornithology and so much more! You can expect to see a wide range of interests reflected in my Outschool course offerings. I also love to hear suggestions from learners - so let me know your class ideas! I love to learn! And I love to teach others what I have learned!

When I am not homeschooling or teaching here on Outschool, you can probably find me reading! I also enjoy hiking, playing board games, and baking. I am so grateful to get the chance to work with many wonderful families through Outschool and I can’t wait to meet you and share my love of learning!
