Flying is magical, but it's not magic--it's science! Join a retired military pilot and aerospace science teacher in discovering the physical forces that act on every airplane in the sky--Lift, Weight, Thrust, and Drag. Explore the scientific principles behind each force and how the forces interact. Learn what aerospace engineers must consider when designing an airplane, and how pilots use the four forces of flight to make airplanes do what they want them to do! This is a discussion based class. Learners will reason together with the instructor to build knowledge and achieve the learning goals. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary--just an interest in the topic!
Learning Goals
State the four force of flight
List factors that contribute to aircraft weight
Explain how a wing produces lift
State two main ways aircraft produce thrust
Explain the types of drag and how they effect flight
Explore how the four forces interact and effect each other
