US Grade 8 - 11
Beginner Level
Get ready to strap in and explore the fascinating world of aircraft aerodynamics! This class will explore the fundamental concepts of aerodynamics, presented by a former US Air Force Instructor Pilot. The course will start with an in-depth look at the four forces of flight, then cover the factors that impact aircraft design and performance, such as maneuverability, controllability, static and dynamic stability, aspect ratio and taper ratio, wing sweepback, and planforms. These factors will be examined throughout various flight regimes, including variations in altitude and aircraft velocity. The instructor will use slides, photos, charts, videos, diagrams and demonstrations to convey technical topics in easily accessible ways. Each lesson has an associated review quiz to check understanding, and each unit contains optional supplementary videos to explore topics in further depth. These are the same topics covered in all basic pilot training courses and college introductory Aerodynamics courses.
Learning Goals
Understand the four forces of flight and how they interact.
Understand how primary and secondary control surfaces work to control aircraft.
Identify the advantages and disadvantages of various wing design attributes such as planform, aspect and taper ratios, sweepback, and dihedral.
