Aviation: History of Aviation and Principles of Flight

It's a bird...It's a plane! Okay, it's a plane so how exactly did it get up there? Let's discover the fascinating history of aviation and then we will make a paper airplane and discover the science and principles of flight!

Class Experience

The history of aviation extends for more than two thousand years, from the earliest forms of aviation such as kites and attempts at tower jumping to supersonic and hypersonic flight by powered, heavier-than-air jets. We will explore the history of aviation for the first part of class then we will move into the science/physics portion.

Principles discussed include:
* Newtons Law
*Bernoulli's Principle
* Forces such as lift, drag, thrust, force

We will also make a paper airplane so that we can practically test the physics properties that are discussed
We will go over vocabulary that's related to principles of flight and the concepts will be reinforced through videos/simulators that demonstrate the principles learned as well as our own paper airplane taking flight and putting these principles to use.

I've worked in aviation for 16 years and I enjoy breaking down seemingly difficult physics concepts and presenting them in a way that any child can understand! This is an academic based history/physics/science class, a lot of information will be presented and it's recommended that your child have a pencil and paper.

*****This class does not go in depth in regard to the components on the aircraft and remains science and physics based. For systematic workings of an aircraft please see my "All about Fighter Jets" class*****

Learning Goals

Goals for this class are to breakdown the principles of flight into physics concepts that are easily understood by your learner
