Class Experience

Students will learn film elements and work on their ability to write and analyze texts. They will be learning how to analyze films by focusing on the film's genre as well as the importance of props, editing, sound, and cinematography. They will learn how different elements provoke different emotions or showcase a character's point of view. Prior knowledge writing analyses will be useful for this class, but not necessary since we will learn and practice in this course. Students will be required to watch Avengers: Infinity War the first week, and write two short essays following class discussions. Learner progress is evaluated based on understanding of the material and improvement of writing on the second essay.

First week - Learn film elements (cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing, sound) using clips from The Magicians (TV-14), Avengers: Age of Ultron, and X-Men: Apocalypse. We will discuss how these elements are used specifically in the superhero/action genre. Students will learn strategies on essay writing, note taking, and film analysis as well.
-Homework: watch film and take notes
Second week - discuss the film and the use of these film elements as well as writing expectations for the first essay
-Homework: Write short essay on film elements with a primary focus on one specific element
Third week - Discuss the moral codes of both the heroes and the villain and how these film elements helped convey this. We will also discuss the guidelines for the final essay and the expectations
-Homework: Write short essay about the morals of a specific character, how their actions affected others, and how were certain film elements used to show the positives and negatives of each action/ideology
Fourth week: Discuss essays and notes, Q & A, and see how to relate what we've learned to other genres, and how film elements can also transfer to video games as well. (using clips from other films and video games): Once Upon a Deadpool, Dark Knight, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, 1408, the dialogue intros of Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2 (just the cinematic entrances with dialogue), and the beginning of Detroit: Become Human.
-Homework: none

I earned my degree in English & Textual Studies, and analyzed texts in various forms including films. I took numerous films studies courses and learned film elements. Films, like other texts, are a medium that can challenge us to think differently. Avengers: Infinity War, for example, provides an opportunity to discuss ethics; we see the motivation for the villain's actions, and also see the consequences of these actions. Learning and discussing ethics enhances our understanding of morality and our ability to empathize.
