Class Experience

Obsessed with Avatar The Last Airbender? Can't get enough of this series and it's world? Love creative writing and want to whip up adventures of your own using this show's amazing characters? Then this course is made for you!

In each class, we will explore a different form of creative writing. You will learn all the elements related to each medium and will also do Avatar-themed writing exercises throughout each class. Literary devices will also be introduced each class. A final assignment in which students write an Avatar-themed poem, short story, or comic will be assigned.

Week 1: Poetry
This class will introduce students to different types of poetry and terminology used in this medium (syllables, stanzas, etc.). Students will learn about Haiku and free verse poetry. They will also learn about alliterations.

Homework: Write a poem about an Avatar character or from the perspective of an Avatar character.

Week 2: Short Stories
The elements of short stories, different types of short stories, and the essentials of a good one will be taught in this class. We will go through the construction of a plot outline and learn about similes and metaphors.

Homework: Write a short story outline with characters from the Avatar-verse.

Week 3: Comics!
Students will learn about comics and how they are used for storytelling. They will learn about onomatopoeia, emanata, and be introduced to the final assignment.

Homework: Complete final assignment (write a free verse poem, short story, or comic strip using one of the given Avatar-themed prompts).

Week 4:
In the final class, students will play a review game on everything we learned as well as some creative writing/Avatar-themed games. They will also share their final assignments.

I strive to provide a class environment that is fun, engaging, and a positive space! I hope to see you there! :)

No tools other than paper and a pencil are required. Class 2 and 3 will also require a worksheet to be printed at home.

***If you don’t see a suitable time, feel free to use the auto-scheduler (click “Show Alternative Times”) or message me to make a section that suits your schedule.***

Beginner course open to all. No prior writing experience required. Knowledge of the TV show Avatar the Last Airbender is required for this class. Students with no knowledge of the show will still learn about creative writing but will not understand the games, references, and write the character-based fan fiction assignments. Thus, their experience would be impaired/they would not have as much of an enjoyable experience as the other students.

Hi there! Teacher Tirath here! Nice to (virtually) meet you! :)

I am so excited to be on Outschool to teach creative courses! I have 4+ years of teaching both English and math to students of all ages, and have been teaching English online for almost three years. I also have experience leading arts camps as well as working with children on film sets. I am excited about this opportunity to be able to continue to open my classroom to students from all over the world!

In terms of my qualifications, I have a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Film Production. My specializations were screenwriting, directing, editing and sound. I have made a few short films of my own which have been shown at film festivals, and I also have done lots of editing work in the past few years. Needless to say, creativity is my passion!

I also have a Bachelors of Science, and love teaching classes that blend both science and the arts!

My teaching style is friendly, patient, and full of positivity. I believe that learning should be enjoyable, so I like to keep my classes engaging and full of fun! Also a positive learning environment is a must in my book!

When I’m not teaching or doing film work, I like to read books, draw, listen to music, and spend some time in nature, whether that be hiking, walking, or biking! I am a total tree hugger!

Hope to see you in my classroom! :)
