Class Experience

This group is a welcoming social space for teen girls (cis and trans welcome) and nonbinary teens, on and around the autism spectrum, (no diagnosis needed) to chat and hang out with other autistic teens, who are more likely to communicate in similar ways to you.

Most of the time we talk and chat about things we are interested in, or stuff going on in our lives (only as much as you want to). I help support the conversation by keeping things flowing, offering discussion prompts, and occasionally bringing up something about life with autism that might be helpful, etc.

Our discussions tend to be a mix of text (via the chat box) and voice, some people heavily favoring one or the other. You are welcome to have your camera on or off, and to change your preferences at any time. You are also welcome to lurk quietly if you want to. The group size is kept small so every participant gets to engage (or not) as much as you feel comfortable and choose to.

This is a chance to be around other autistic teens and an autistic adult, who accept you for all your beautiful weirdness--because we're weird, too! Autistics tend to communicate better with other autistics, and it is often more comfortable to talk with others who are like you, so you get positive social time. No eye contact required!

If you want to, you'll also get the chance to ask an autistic woman questions about navigating the teenage years, or life, as an autistic-ly wonderful person. That could include how make friends, or deal with an annoying person, or any other social relationships you want to get better at. Or about life with autism. Or sensory differences. This is your chance to ask about what you want to know!

This is a drop-in, ongoing class. Come when you want. Stay only as long as you like.

Why turn to an an autistic adult to model social skills?
Who better? I know for a fact that it is entirely possible for autistics to feel comfortable in social situations—especially when we're around people who we feel at ease with. And since autistics speak the same language, as it were, I can communicate in ways that are most accessible to teens on the spectrum.
