Description
Class Experience
This is a discussion style class in which I will talk about my personal experience advocating for myself and other autistics. I will share my own experiences and give the students a chance to tell us about any time they have advocated for themselves or wished that they could. We will talk about how to disclose your diagnosis to get support when needed, and how to request accommodations, and what accommodations you may want to ask for based on your individual needs. As an autistic adult who also has learning disabilities, I have had to learn to advocate for myself in various situations such as at the hospital, in college and at work. I have also advocated for children I was a community support worker or classroom aide for in order to make sure they got their unique needs met in school, at youth group, and in various other situations. I have my associate's degree in special education, 10 years of teaching experience, 8 years of experience working with special needs children, and 5 years of experience working professionally with autistic children.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
All students must be aware of their autism diagnosis or the fact they they may be autistic if they do not have an official diagnosis.
