Class Experience

In this learner-directed, ongoing class, we will engage in back and forth conversations while strengthening our gameplay for our favorite online game, Roblox!

After enrollment you will receive a notification from Outschool welcoming you to my class. In this email will be my Roblox gamertag/username. Please have your student send me a friend request on Roblox before class start as this allows us the maximum time for learning. Each student is allowed a set amount of time for their game choice and having this process completed beforehand allows the full game time to be used during class.

We will start the class with brief introductions, then some simple guidelines with what to expect from the class. Each learner will give their game choice and a private server will be purchased by myself and setup immediately. Time will be divided equally between each participant. Students will click the link in the Zoom chat that will take them to a private server where only enrolled students can join. Using a private server to play different games each week keeps students safe. All chats (Zoom and Roblox) are monitored by myself and students will only be communicating and playing with their classmates.

We will practice prompting with questions, discuss subjects with interest, and implement back and forth verbal communication.  Students will also be taught how to approach an opinion that they don't agree with and how to handle that situation in the best manner. We will talk about what makes the levels we play challenging or too easy. Last, we will all share some tips and tricks in order to strengthen our gameplay.

**Please note - ALL students are expected to follow classroom rules, which include appropriate language, encouraging other students during gameplay, acting fair and using good sportsmanship.**

My goal is to allow students to have a comfortable, social learning environment where they can practice their social skills and learn from others while talking about their favorite topic, online gaming. This class is a no pressure class, we are here to have fun and play well with our friends while learning!

This Roblox class is a smaller class size in order to allow for more verbal prompting and guidance to occur when/if needed. While this class is still learner-directed and follows the flow of the students, extra help will be provided if students need it. If your student requires specific accommodations or has learning goals you would like to have followed, please message me prior to class so I can implement them. I am happy to help your student do the best they can in class, so feel free to message me any concerns or to see if this class is a good fit prior to enrollment.
Learning Goals
-Social/Emotional Development (helping with the ability to adjust to new settings, learning respect for themselves and others, following simple rules and directions, and helping recognize the feelings of others)

-Cognitive Development (observes and participates in discussions, understands cause and effects, applies knowledge learned to a new situation)

-Language Development (expresses themselves, comprehends conversations and participates back, answers and asks questions)

Parental Guidance
Your student is required to share their Roblox gamer tag prior to class in order to join my private servers. Please message me your gamer tag privately and do not post it in the classroom for safety. Only learners enrolled in my classes are permitted to join my private servers during gameplay/class time. Please know that some games have a more mature theme. It is required that you and your student are comfortable with the Roblox gaming platform prior to enrollment. If there are any questions or concerns, I am more than happy to discuss them before attending. Roblox is available on smartphones, tablets, desktop computers, the Xbox One, and some VR headsets. Roblox has an ESRB rating of E10+ for Everyone 10 and up for Fantasy Violence, which means that typical gameplay should be suitable for most kids. If you or your student isn't comfortable with a certain game on the platform, please let me know before class.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught my homeschooled children for over 10 years, from elementary age through high school academic subjects/curriculum. I have a background teaching autistic children, those with ADHD, developmental and intellectual disabilities, social anxiety, mental disorders, and physical disabilities for 10 years. I create curriculum and plan lessons around my student’s specific academic needs. Each child learns differently and at their own pace.  It takes a dedicated teacher to pinpoint what type of learner a student is (visual, kinesthetic, auditory, or logical). By learning what different styles my students learned best in, I created a unique lesson plan that helped them reach their full potential.

I have over 20 years of experience working directly with youth in my community. I have volunteered for over 8 years with the special needs community and am currently involved with several groups in my area. As a current Certified Coach with the Special Olympics organization, I help student-athletes, ages 8 and above, reach their full potential on and off the field. I teach them to correctly verbalize their frustrations, communicate productively with teammates, develop lasting friendships, and self-advocate. These actions help the athletes have overall better sportsmanship and be a better teammate.

I am currently studying Child Psychology, which gives me better insight into developing minds. I have a great passion for helping students with their socio-emotional needs.
