Class Experience
This class is taught twice a week for 20 minutes at a time to ensure students are engaged and interested. I welcome all children with disabilities, including non verbal learners. The first class is dedicated to getting to know the child or teen by assessing their abilities in communication and their skills at following instructions. After this first class, I will create pertinent activities for your learner. We will work on picture to picture association, picture to word association or picture to letter association, depending on what level your child is currently at. This will be done using Google Jamboard. Learners must be able to use a touch pad or mouse to drag the objects on the screen together. For example, the will be a list of words and various images. Learners will drag the word to the correct image. If a learner is a non reader, there will be identical images to match. There could also be a combination of these two activities. At each class, we will also practice imitation skills. This might look slightly different for every learner: imitation can be simple movement with hands, sounds or complete sentences. I will also work on following instructions. This will be done with simple objects like a plastic bowl, a spoon and a coin. I also use lots of praise to encourage learners to keep up with the fast paced activities. I will use check marks to visually show students their progress. When they complete a task willingly, they get a check mark. I encourage parents to have a reward for after class to offer the learner for earning the check marks. A typical class might look like this: Activity 1: "do like me" learner imitates my movements (touch head, clap hands, touch nose) Activity 2: "say like me" the learner repeats what I say (say "woof woof", say "big yellow bowl", say "three, nine, four, six") Activity 3: on Jamboard find the same (find two images that are identical and slide the images together) Activity 4: on Jamboard find the image that starts with a letter (find the image that starts with the letter b, c and d), Activity 5: follow my instructions" learner does what I say (put the coin in the bowl, put the spoon next to the bowl) Activity 6: "do like me" learner imitates my hand movements (make a fist, point a finger, rub hands together) Activity 7: on Jamboard find the words that go with the images (find the word and the image of a cat, find the word pear and the picture of a pear). In this example the student would earn 7 check marks for all 7 completed activities. Praise would be given at each activity.
Learning Goals
Students will learn imitation skills. They will also learn to follow one, two and three step instructions. Students will also practice picture to picture association, picture to word association and the first letter of common words using a letter to image association. This is done in a quick paced and positive atmosphere.
