Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Auditioning is an exciting (and sometime nerve-wracking) part of musical theatre! It is your chance to show your skills and personality and put forth your best self to try for the role of your dreams. Sometimes, the auditioning process can feel overwhelming, with lots of things to think about and plan. This class is designed to help make that easier.

In this class, we will cover preparation for musical theatre auditions, focusing on the song part of the audition. We will discuss auditioning generally, going over some of what to expect and some different types of auditions that might occur for musicals.

Learners will learn how to select a song for their musical theatre audition. Learners will also learn how to "cut" or shorten their song to the appropriate length for their audition. We will discuss marking the sheet music for these cuts and how to best prepare for working with an accompanist.

Learners will also learn a bit about taped auditions (self tapes), which is a common form of auditioning in this day and age. Finally, we will cover how to prepare for the song portion of a musical theatre audition - how to practice and the tools needed to gain confidence for the audition.

There are four lessons for this course. Each lesson contains a two-part video lesson with a subsequent assignment. It is estimated that this course would take one to two weeks to complete, depending on the speed that the learner chooses to work through the material. I will communicate with the learners upon completion of each assignment and will typically respond within a few days.

This is an invaluable audition course for young musical theatre performers and is a great way to demystify the audition process. Auditioning can feel intimidating, and it is my goal to help put performers' minds at ease so that they can present their best skills in the audition room.
