Audition Rep and Prep Your Book: Flex for Ages 11-16.
Broadway Core // Miss Dori
This 8-week introductory series will coach performers as they prepare and perfect their first audition selections so they can nail their upcoming musical theater auditions with confidence and ease. For ages 11-16.
This eight class series introduces the basic foundational concepts and ideas that can help the learner better prepare for and nail their musical theater audition. Learning to audition comfortably and confidently is a skill separate from learning to sing, dance, and act. All skills one must develop and practice regularly if wanting to perform in musicals. It is important to develop a collection of different well-rehearsed and developed audition pieces that best suit the performer for the...
During this course, the learners will learn about and practice basic skills and disciplines around auditioning for the musical theater stage. They will learn about the etiquette of auditioning and looking like a professional. "What to do" and "what not to do" will be discussed. Each week the learner will explore a new concept with a homework assignment focused on what was discussed in the class. They will regularly submit videos with the weekly homework and provide positive support to the other learners in the group. During the last class, the learner will submit a "mock audition" for the class where they will get a strong sense of what it feels like from start to finish within the audition process. The goal of the course is to help the learner gain some foundational skills and confidence around walking into and nailing their audition for musical theater. They will be well on their way to having at least one audition piece prepared and ready to be performed.
I have over twenty years of experience staging, choreographing, teaching, and coaching budding musical theater performers. Additionally, I started as a triple threat performer, have performed and choreographed all over the country, and my undergrad degree is in dance, musical theater, and education. I love building skill and confidence in young performers and passionate to share my love of this art form.
Homework OfferedThere will be weekly homework assignments which are estimated to take approximately 2 hours/week to prepare and learn. It may take less or more. Each week will have a different focus around preparing for, developing one's rep, and learning the skills around auditioning. The learner will be given a selection of choices for material to learn, practice, perfect, and ultimately perform. They will be asked to perform each week with a final performance the last week. The pieces don't need to be longer than 1-2 minutes. As this is a hands-on course designed to support and coach learners to feeling more confident in their auditioning skills and performance, there will be weekly video submissions relating to the assigned homework. This is so the instructor can give positive feedback regularly to help the learner progress in their performance skills. Additionally, there will be a little bit of "journaling" to help further develop one's character and performance process. This can be written or just recorded, whichever method works best for the learner.
1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments OfferedThere is no final grade. However, weekly/regular feedback on homework videos will be offered as the instructor wants to help positively support and coach each of her learners to feel confident in walking into their auditions. Regular participation and submittals will ensure that the learner gets the personalized attention they deserve to help promote growth in their performance abilities.
Nothing is needed ahead of class. However, the learner will be given a list of "performance content" which they will select from to match homework assignments. I will provide links to youtube versions of the music, etc. However, if you find you would like to be fully prepared to take that particular piece into an audition, I can help you find resources to purchase the sheet music, etc to have it for a "live" audition. This is not necessary for the sake of this course.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Notes about the class: Please fill out the health waiver included in the welcome email ASAP. Make sure to get it back to me at least 1 hour before class starts. (It's best to get it back to me 24 hours prior to class. This ensures I have adequate time to review it.) As part of the class will be movement-based, please provide an open workout space free of any items that could potentially trip or cause the learner to slip. Please encourage your learner to wear clothing that is comfortable and easy to move in such as yoga pants, sweat pants, t-shirts, slip-free socks, bare feet, etc. Please have a water bottle close by in case your learner feels they need something to drink. While I will be providing movement instruction and modifications that are designed for beginners, adult supervision is still highly recommended and advisable.
The course will be using Flip grid as a method to share homework via video, discussion, and feedback on performance assignments.
