In this fun STEAM course, we'll use hands-on experiments to learn about intriguing chemical reactions and how atoms combine to form different molecules! (Chemistry Course, Homeschool & Afterschool) #academic

Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
A detailed description of each session's learning goals is listed below:

Session 1:
Students will learn about:
- Atoms and subatomic particles (protons, neutrons and electrons)
- Covalent molecular bonding and different types of covalent bonds
- Introducing atomic symbols, symbolic chemical equations and chemical reactions
- Electron orbitals and the importance of the valence (outer) electron shell
- Structure of the Periodic Table of Elements based on electron shell levels
- Seeing a chemical reaction equation in action with hands-on Carbon Dioxide bubble experiment

Session 2:
Students will learn about:
- Ionic and covalent molecular bonding
- Electron orbitals and the importance of the valence (outer) electron shell in determining molecule bonds
- Structure of the Periodic Table of Elements based on electron shell levels
- Predicting atomic behavior and writing symbolic representations of molecules
- Introduction to chemical reaction formulas
- Hands-on experiment making ice cream with salt

Session 3:
Students will learn about:
- Acids, Bases and the pH scale
- Ionic and covalent molecular bonding
- Relationships between atoms in the same row and column of the Periodic Table
- Electron orbitals and the importance of the valence (outer) electron shell
- Introduction to chemical reaction formulas
- Hands-on experiment testing pH of different liquids

Session 4:
Students will learn about:
- The role of neutrons in an atom, and definition of isotopes
- Introduction to chemical reaction formulas
- Oxidation of some metals and use of a weak acid solution to clean metal
- Radioactive isotopes and their use in Carbon Dating
- Hands-on experiment using a chemical reaction to clean dirty pennies
Quantum Physics for Kids is dedicated to introducing young students to the amazing world of quantum physics, technological innovation and design! We've been offering STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math) classes and creating educational materials for students of all ages for over 15 years. We're excited to share this course content with more students through Outschool.
Homework Offered
Each week will include homework review handouts, which are optional to complete but highly recommended. An answer key will be provided.
0 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learner progress will be assessed through class participation, homework handouts and a quiz at the end of each session.
Grades Offered
 4 files available upon enrollment
The course utilizes illustrated Atom Cards (for elements 1-54). Printable handouts of the Atom Cards will be provided in the Course Classroom for self-printing at home. (These are the same cards used in Atom Secrets Level 1). In addition, printable review handouts are provide for each class session. All handouts are provided upon course registration. An optional supply list for each week's hands-on activity is listed below. In each session, we will be creating a safe chemical reaction, using common household items: Optional Supply List for the Course - Week 1 Supplies: Making CO2 Bubbles 1. Baking Soda (a couple teaspoons) 2. Vinegar (½ cup) 3. Detergent (a couple teaspoons) 4. Food coloring (if on hand) 5. Container for mixing (preferably clear); spoon for mixing Week 2 Supplies: Making Ice Cream with Salt 1. Salt (1/2 cup) 2. Bag of ice chips or cubes 3. 2 large ziploc bags 4. For the ice cream mixture: Milk (1 cup), sugar (about 1 Tbsp) and a few drops of vanilla (optional) Week 3 Supplies: Acid Base Investigation 1. Litmus Ph Paper or Cabbage Juice pH tester Any pH paper will do, and can be ordered through any major online retailer, like Amazon (search "pH paper"). Or you can make your own Cabbage Juice pH Paper (please Google "Cabbage Juice pH Paper" for instructions). 2. Different small amounts of liquids to test pH, such as: Milk, soda, lemon juice, apple juice, almond milk, coffee, tea, water, salt water, sugar water, vinegar, etc. 3. Dish or paper to lay out the pH paper tests for easier clean-up Week 4 Supplies: Cleaning Old Pennies 1. Old Pennies (the dirtier the better) 2. Salt (3 Tablespoons) 3. Vinegar (1/2 cup) 4. A container for mixing 5. Paper towel or dish to place the pennies to dry
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
