In this course students will lean a basic outline of the American Civil War. This will include the causes of the war. This is a very basic outline of the war with the main focus of the class on Tillie Pierce and the book she wrote. Tillie was a 15 year old girl, at the time of the battle of Gettysburg. She would later go on to write about her experiences of the battle that hit in her hometown. We will go over questions like, what did she see of the fighting?, whom did she meet, who did...
I feel that many students find history to be boring because they cannot connect with anyone in the past. By introducing them to a person who was close to their age at the time of the battle, students will have a newfound respect for history. I have been fascinated by this period in American history, and have studied the Civil War since I was 12. Reading many books and visiting as many historical places I could. I live within an hours drive from the Gettysburg battlefield, and visit at least twice a year. I am a law enforcement officer, and have given tours of the battlefield to my peers, friends and family. I have stayed at the Tillie Pierce Inn, which is the house Tillie lived in at the time of the war and have visited the various locations on the battlefield that she wrote about.
Read the short book “At Gettysburg or what a girl saw and heard of the battle.” This book can be found online for around $5. It is considered on of the best first hand accounts of the battle. Or see the link below in materials for a copy of the book.
The book "At Gettysburg or What a Girl Saw and Heard of the Battle" which was written by Tillie herself goes for about $5 on Amazon. You can also see the link attached for a copy online.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
This is ultimately a lesson about war, I will be sensitive to the subject matter of death but it will be brought up. Please make sure your children understand this and are prepard to discuss the matter.
