Class Experience

US Grade 8 - 11
The goal of this book club is to read highly acclaimed books and write short reading responses for each book. This book club is perfect for parents who want their teens to read and write each week.

Over the course of the semester, we will read a variety of highly acclaimed books across genres. I have chosen these books to get students excited and engaged with the writing, making them want to share their thoughts with others. The books we will be reading and discussing are:

Week 1 - Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree

Week 2 - The Getaway by Lamar Giles

Week 3 - Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

Week 4 - The Forest of Stolen Girls by June Hur

Week 5 - After Dark with Roxie Clark by Brooke Lauren Davis

Week 6 - The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty

Week 7 - Star Splitter by Matthew J. Kirby

Week 8 - All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

This class is for the student who devours books, and because of this, we will be reading one book every week and discussing the essential themes and critical elements in each book. Students who enjoy sharing their thoughts with others will do well in this class.

This is a flex class and will not include live meetings. Instead, I will introduce each book with a video in the classroom at the start of each week and will follow up with questions for the student. Each student will need to respond to the questions and each other in the classroom. Students will also write one reading response for each book, and I will provide feedback on each response. This will help them critically analyze what they read.

I will be an active participant in these discussions, encouraging the students to participate and to jump in with more thoughts as they read the book throughout the week. My goal with the discussions is to foster a sense of community with the students in which they feel encouraged to share their thoughts with their peers and me.
Learning Goals
Book clubs are a great way to teach students to form and share opinions with others which are an important skill to have as they get older. I run all book clubs so every student is able to answer questions that I pose and participate in the discussion. My goal for the students is to get them to share their thoughts however they feel comfortable doing that.
