This is an asynchronous Self-Paced class, meaning that we will N̲O̲T̲ meet live over Zoom. For a live version of this class, click here: https://outschool.com/classes/11-reading-writing-essay-tutorials-with-a-certified-teacher-hp8Rg197?refuid=AyMOPYKP If you choose the "Pay Weekly" option when you enroll, the lesson will be released weekly. If you choose to "Pay Upfront," please be aware that you will not see any videos or content yet; videos and assignments will be posted once a week for each of the four weeks, as the weeks build and content is designed around your learner's needs. I ask you please choose a Monday as your start date. It is much easier to keep track of when to post and follow a routine when you do this. Bonus: It gives me a few days to get to know your learner's need and create custom material! Each week, I will provide one lecture video, typically 10-20 minutes. It will go over skills used in the activities to be completed. After activities are completed, I will provide feedback. Most often, I provide feedback on Sundays for anything submitted the previous week. Content will build from week to week to help develop concepts and skills, and again will be tailored to your learner’s needs. Your learner can communicate through comments in the classroom and via messaging with me. I love getting to know my learners, and especially love when they identify something they are struggling with and reach out for help. That's a strength! I will incorporate your learner's interests into sessions when possible. In the past, this has included writing and reading about soccer, The Land of Stories, Minecraft, and two-sentence horror stories. In this one-on-one class, I will assist students with reading, writing, and/or ELA homework help. I can help guide your learner with SAT prep, writing a formal essay or book report, creative writing, reading comprehension, homework help, or anything your learner needs. I will briefly assess learners to try to measure their specific needs. Grownups can also tell me what areas they would like for me to tutor their learners in. Initially, your learner will read and/or write for me- depending on the skills we are working on. This writing sample will provide me with the information I need to begin planning future lessons using your learner's unique learning style. I will then design our lessons around those results. As an alternative, learners can also complete an assessment prior to the start of class. Based on each learner's needs a goals, some skills we work may include but are not limited to: Reading Comprehension: Skills we may work on to improve reading comprehension might include decoding, connecting ideas throughout a story or nonfiction piece, using previous knowledge as a foundation for the material being read, inferring, monitoring comprehension and focus, and asking questions while we read. Writing Various Types of Sentences: Skills we may work on to write better sentences might include explicitly learning about the different types of sentences, adding on to simple sentences, using descriptive language, learning about and improving grammar and parts of speech, and the mechanics of writing- punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Writing Paragraphs: Skills we may work on might include structure, writing and identifying topic sentences, providing supporting details and examples, breaking down a prompt, and using transitions. Writing a 4 to 5 Paragraph Essay: Skills we may work on might include organization, layout, flow, clarity, identifying and writing thesis statements, introducing a topic, using transitions, connecting body paragraphs, proofreading, and planning. Analyzing Novels, Essays, and Arguments: Skills we may work on might include addressing biases, remaining objective when necessary, making strong claims, writing strong and clear thesis statements, using and citing textual evidence for support, paraphrasing, identifying strengths and weaknesses in arguments, anticipating counterclaims, identifying symbolism, and interpreting meaning in fiction. Sections are listed in 4-week increments. If after the first four weeks you would like to continue working together in this format, you will simply need to enroll in a second four-week class and our work can continue to build off the the first four weeks. **Please note that if I receive a learner's work or questions later than the requested deadlines, I may not be able to provide feedback, follow-up lessons, etc within my promised time frame. I will always provide at least four video lessons and post activities to be completed, even if I am not receiving posted work from your learner, but the lessons may not be a best match to their needs if I have not seen their work, or if their needs hue not been communicated with me.
