Astrophysics is the application of physics to understand celestial phenomena. In this course learners will explore both how we learn about the universe and some of what we have learned using theories and techniques of modern physics. Each week we will examine a concept in physics and explore how it helps us to learn about and understand phenomena in space. We will investigate questions such as: What is science? What is the difference between a law and a theory? How do we study the universe? What is a fundamental force? How do we study the origins of the universe? How are stars born and why do they die? This course is intended for leaners with a deep interest in space. While it is not a requirement, it is suggested that students have taken a space course with me (or in another context) before or have self-taught knowledge in the area. No previous background in physics or higher math is necessary! This is a highly interactive course. Students will learn through an image and video filled presentation and discussion. Students’ participation and questions are regularly encouraged. Classes are designed to encourage student engagement and follow their curiosity. Week One – Understanding Science Week Two – Scale, Unit, Mass and Size Week Three – Fundamental Particles Week Four – Fundamental Forces Week Five – Radiation, Waves, Light Week Six – History of the Universe Week Seven – Stars Part One Week Eight – Stars Part Two
