Astrophysics 101: What Are Supermassive Black Holes?

One time class students will learn about the process behind Supermassive Black Hole formation. Students will learn about the journey that a heavy star takes when it goes 'supernovae' to eventually form into a supermassive black hole.

Description

Class Experience

I will spend the first 10 minutes of the class discussing 'What are Supermassive Black holes?'. I will then ask and discuss with the students  'How they think Black Holes are created' and see any prior knowledge on how stars are formed for another 10 minutes, with use of a video showing their amazing formation. We will then discuss 'How are we aware of Supermassive Black holes', 'what is the evidence that they exist in our universe?' and then I will show the first ever picture taken of a...

Students will understand what a supermassive black hole is, how it is formed and understand how we know that they exist.

I have a masters degree in Astrophysics as well as being trained as a Physics specialist teacher.

45 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.

We will refer to an X-ray image of a black hole and watch a video on Supermassive Black hole formation
