Class Experience

*** All my classes are available in Spanish upon request ***

During this one time class, students will learn how to make real astronomical images using data from the Faulkes Telescope. These images will be their art creation. Students will be introduced to the process of observing with a professional telescope and the steps required to be able to use the information gathered from the telescope. We will also discuss the electromagnetic spectrum in general, but focus in the optical in particular. The students are required to be familiar with using a computer. They must have a software already installed in their computers (since they will use this to create their own color images); this software is free and it is called: SalsaJ (http://www.euhou.net/index.php/salsaj-software-mainmenu-9/download-mainmenu-10).

The fist part of the class is a lecture, and the second part of the class is a practice where first I will explain how to create the image, and then the students will create them for themselves. We will have discussions, and they can share the screen to show us their final image, or share if they encounter any problems in the process of creating the images.

If you have any questions about the software installation before class, please contact me for support. It is important that during the class all the students are already prepared.

Learning Goals

- Students will learn what is the electromagnetic spectrum.
- They will learn about the composition of light.
- They will learn about the process of making this images and what astronomers call "data reduction" process.
- Finally, they will learn how to create a color image from 3 black and white images, taken with the red, blue and green filter of the telescope.

Supply List
The students will only need this free software installed in their computers. I will send students a file with images that we will use during the class.
External Resources
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
  • SalsaJ
Sources
We will be using data from the Faulkes Telescopes (https://lco.global/) and a software called SalsaJ (http://www.euhou.net/index.php/salsaj-software-mainmenu-9/)
