Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
In this one time class, we will focus on the Moon; how the Moon orbits the Earth; and how we see different parts of the Moon illuminated as it moves around planet Earth, showing us its different phases. In order to understand the phases of the moon, we will visualize the Earth, Sun and Moon system. For this, I will show the students my "Phases Simulator Machine" ( a shoebox with a small ball in the center representing the moon, a light on one of the sides, representing the Sun, and 4 little windows representing the different views of the Moon as seen from Earth).
This class is structured as follows:
- We will start with a brief introduction of who we are and why were the students interested in the class (only if they want to share).
- Then we will have a very short power point presentation to visually illustrate how the moon moves around the Earth.
- We will experiment with a light and a ball, how we can create different phases on the ball, just like the phases of the Moon. Learners are welcome to bring their own flash light and ball to experiment in the class.
- I will introduce the students to my "Phases Simulator Machine"
- Review and questions (although questions and comment are welcome at any time during the class)

---> No previous knowledge of Astronomy is required.

Supply List
The students may bring a flash light and any spherical object (an orange, a ball, etc.) to experiment with me on how to make the phases of the Moon. Although they can bring any spherical object, I recommend one with plain colors that they can hold with one hand.
