Students will get to take a tour of our solar system without leaving their seat! Discover planets without atmospheres or magnetic shields, gas giants that electrify moons and ice giants that radiate too much energy. You'll listen to hexagonal lightning storms on Saturn, hear cyclotron whistlers on Jupiter, and unlock the mysteries of Mercury's dragon tail! We'll hop to each planet, looking at real images from satellites and spacecraft, discover what scientists have determined based on scientific data, ask questions about what we notice and discuss ideas for what we'd like to learn more about on the next mission. As a bonus, students will learn how to use a pair of binoculars for night time stargazing, specifically looking at the moons of our two largest planets in the solar system. Class is available for students of all ages located anywhere on the planet.
Learning Goals
The solar system includes eight planets, their moons, one Sun at the center, and smaller objects (comets and asteroids).
Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are rocky terrestrial planets, Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants and Uranus and Neptune are ice giants.
