Class Experience

Are you competitive and seeking to incorporate your love for game into your ASL learning journey? If so, you've come to the right place. In this class we will play ASL games nearly all class period, often taking only fifteen minutes during the beginning to learn a few signs and rules pertaining to the game. Look forward to friendly competitions and team building games and exercises to grow your communicative skills in ASL. PLEASE NOTE that students will need to know at least the fingerspelled alphabet to partake, as this is a reoccurring class where each session is not contingent upon the next, but the main skill of fingerspelling is necessary and likely to be included in every class. The games we play will depend on the various levels of students attending the session, but no matter your skill level, as long as you know the fingerspelled alphabet from A - Z, you will be able to participate.

Each session will be centered around learning or practicing using signs from one or more of the following topics:
- Fingerspelling
- Numbers
- Basic Greeting Signs
- Basic Family Signs
- Basic Food Signs
- Basic Color Signs
- Basic Animal Signs
- Basic Emotional/Feeling signs (eg. Happy, Sad, etc...)
- Basic Signs pertaining to Hobbies & Interests
- Basic School and Classroom Signs
- Basic Sport Signs

Below is a description of how the first four weeks' sessions will go:

Session of (04/05/24) - Our theme will be food.

We will spend up to the first fifteen minutes of class learning or reviewing ASL food vocabulary. We'll then play a game pertaining to fingerspelling receptiveness and foods. Finally, we'll play a Memory game using the recently learned food signs.

Session of Week (04/26/24) - Our theme will be ASL fingerspelling.

We will play ASL Scattergories, a fun word category game with an ASL twist.

I have been learning American Sign Language since my introduction to the visual language at age two and have taught beginning ASL to 5-12-year-olds at a local homeschool coop for the past three years. I've also learned a host of ASL games through attending ASL meetups and deaf events and I love using games as an opportunity for students to learn.
