Description

Class Experience

The Deaf community goes through much to express themselves to non-signers and often face discrimination. This is a safe space to experience a different form of communication that may not feel comfortable. This class is also a chance to focus intently on ASL and change your mind frame to match it. Without gaining an appreciation of the culture, it just becomes appropriation.
I am offering this class because learning ASL has become commercialized only focusing of the match up of words to sign. ASL is a real language and needs to be treated with respect and not as entertainment. As a 10 year learning, I have formal education and the passion to teach students from the perspective of a lover of culture and language. I graduated from college and became a full time ASL interpreter that has worked in different fields and been involved in ASL acquisition in students. Without gaining an appreciation of the culture, it just becomes appropriation.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Every class is progress! A chance to grow an feel good about what you as a learner produces. This is a guided self assessment, to break through that certain comfort levels. Having daily focuses help with weekly accomplishments.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 2 - 4 hours per week outside of class.
