In this bi-monthly Book Club, learners will read specific books with Deaf characters and be prepared to discuss aspects of deafness Deaf Culture as it is portrayed in each particular book.

US Grade 5 - 8
This is an ongoing class that will meet on a regular schedule bi-monthly beginning the first week of Sept. Every other week in a 45 minute class learners will meet to discuss the book listed on the class schedule for that week. The class was purposely designed to give learners 2 weeks to read the selected book before each class, so it is important to look ahead on the schedule and plan accordingly. I have my degree in Elementary Education and Deaf Education from Bowling Green State University. I have taught in deaf and hearing classrooms, been a mainstream interpreter and served as an intervention tutor in public schools. In addition I have had experience with the Deaf community interpreting and teaching ASL to children and adults.
Homework Offered
Learners must read the novel of the week BEFORE class and be prepared to discuss it.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Student must read the book of the week and bring a copy of it to class. Many of these books can be borrowed from local libraries or purchased from a variety of online book stores. (Thrift Books is a great resource)
Some of the books that will be read deal with sensitive topics such as divorce, death, adoption, foster care and bullying. Parents are encouraged to read reviews of the book to determine if it is suitable for their learner.
