Class Experience
We will be learning to sign one recipe, cake mix cookies, by following along with my prerecorded video. This course will take place through a prerecorded video while students are able to watch and learn new ASL signs related to baking a recipe! Students will begin by assembling the recipe and following along with my video, and then learn related signs while they wait for their treats to bake! Students should be ready to learn to sign all ingredients and instructions for the recipe. Be ready to learn how to cook delicious cake mix-cookies AND learn how to sign the ingredients and recipe! You will surely impress with your yummy cookies and new signs. Students will have the option to make their preferred flavor of cookies based on whatever cake mix they'd like to use! This recipe is very simple, and students only need a cake mix of their choice (please refrain from using angel food cake), 2 eggs, and 1/2 cup oil (vegetable or canola is recommended). There is also the option of rolling the cookies in powdered sugar before baking (which I recommend!) or adding in chocolate chips. Please note that only one video will be posted, and this will be posted in the first week of class. This will allow learners to complete the recipe whenever they would like (and as many times that they would like!) over the course of the four weeks! Once learners complete the recipe, I expect pictures to be posted in the discussion board so we can all compare our flavors, cookie size, and more! We will also have a vote on who thinks their cookies turned out the best, allowing for interaction and critical thinking between learners.
Learning Goals
Students will prepare cookies with a simple recipe using a cake mix--and learn how to sign their way through the recipe! Only one video will be posted, but they are able to customize add-ins as they please and are encouraged to attempt the cookies multiple times.

Parental Guidance
While this recipe is fairly easy, I ask that parents help their younger students out with the recipe if you think they may need help. This will help students stay caught up with the video, though they will be able to pause and replay as needed!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Bachelor's Degree from Bowling Green State University
I am offering this course because after taking four ASL courses in College, I am looking for a way to spread the language and educate more people. I also love baking, so I thought this was a perfect way to combine two of my favorite things! I would love to offer more baking classes, so if there is a recipe you'd be interested in, feel free to send me a request.
