Class Experience

Beginner Level
Want to learn how to communicate using the speed of light or count to 100 using just one hand? My ASL self-paced videos do just that! Each week there will be an interactive video uploaded that students will need to watch on the topics below. As an option, students can also video themselves and interact with the video discussions posted in the classroom discussion board.
Included in "Sign with Mrs. G's - Self-Pace" package, students will receive access to my exclusive "Sign with Mrs. G" Quizlets, giving more opportunities to practice. Quizlet is optional. Students will need to send a message to teacher to receive the link. There will be no live meetings for this class.

Course Objective:
American Sign Language (ASL) is a remarkable, complex and naturally existing language used by Deaf people in North America. ASL I introduces students to a language and the community of people that use it. You will learn the vocabulary, grammar, and culturally appropriate uses of ASL through natural, everyday conversational situations. This course will encourage "your turn" activities.
Since ASL is a visual/gestural language, you will need to develop communication skills of which you are not accustomed: using one's hands, face, body, eyes and space. In order to progress, it is important that students become comfortable "listening" with their eyes.

Assignments/Skill Enhancement Exercises

1. Video Discussion Posts: Student will be assigned engaging activities to show what they have learned. All student video responses are optional. Teacher will interact with positive feedback on videos posted by student supporting student growth in class.

2. Fingerspelling, Numbers and Core Vocabulary Review: Constant review of the vocabulary and regular practice of fingerspelling and numbers is critical to your progress in this course. You will be asked to review vocabulary regularly. Video offers "your turn" dialogues for practice.

3. Receptive: To students develop receptive skills, learners will be invited to Mrs. G’s exclusive Quizlets to play games and master signs learned in class videos. Quizlet is optional. Students will need to message teacher for the link.

4. Expressive : You will be asked to follow along with the posted video using "your turn". "Your turn" and video posts, are expressive activities designed to help students learn what fluent ASL "feels" like.
