Class Experience

This six week online course will serve as a review for any students who have either already taken ASL 2 with me in the past, or students who have taken several ASL courses and wish to eventually enter into the full semester course of Advanced ASL (ASL 3). Over the six weeks, students will be asked to demonstrate knowledge of classifying signs, signing in different tenses, how to gloss, use of classifiers and proper construction of ASL signed sentences (topics all taught and discussed in ASL 2). This is also a great time for students to ask any and all questions they might have about certain signs or to clarify signs or concepts they may have learned in the past and are having trouble remembering how to sign. Here is an example of the layout of this six week review course:

Week One: Review of the classification of signs; students will be asked to produce various iconic, arbitrary, compound and directional signs.

Week Two: Review of the rule of 9 as well as ordering and sequencing; students will be asked to produce different time signs utilizing the rule of 9 as well as demonstrate an understanding of ordering.

Week Three: Review of tenses: past, present, future; students will be asked to produce signed sentences in various tenses using learned vocabulary.

Week Four: Review of ASL grammar and syntax; students will be asked to reorder sentences from English to ASL in both OSV and SVO form.

Week Five: Review of Glossing; students will be asked to gloss various English sentences.

Week Six: Review of Classifiers; students will be asked to produce different signed sentences using ASL classifiers.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I grew up with a Deaf family member. I learned the basics of American Sign Language at a very young age and found it incredibly helpful as I moved through childhood and into adulthood. I could communicate with other children who were clearly frustrated that no one either could or was willing to take the time and make the effort to interact with them. As an adult, I studied American Sign Language in college so that I could better communicate with the many deaf and hearing impaired members of my community.
