How Outschool Works

Topics will include: What's happening in America right now? What are people protesting about? What is police brutality? What is race? What is racism? What is antiracism? Why are people so passionate about this? We will interact with each other in a traditional lecture format with some slides and a lot of discussion.
The sole goal is for students to come away from these discussions with a new understanding about history, empathy for people different than themselves, and ideas for how to act in a meaningful way moving forward.
My Facebook profile is here: https://www.facebook.com/brandon.middleton My LinkedIn profile is here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brmiddle These show some of my social, educational, and professional past. They do not all the way show my lived experience as a Black man, husband, dad, son, and friend ... all of which are a part of what will frame how I engage the students in our discussions.
I will provide a lot of resources for all participants in the class ... there will be podcasts, videos, books, news articles, etc.

Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour per week in class, and an estimated 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class.
We will talk about topics that may be upsetting to some (around racism, inequality, and unfair treatment) but I will not be showing any graphic videos to students in this series of discussions.
