Description

Class Experience

We will read young adult (YA) novels and novellas by Asian and Asian American authors through a variety of themes such as identity, family, creativity, belonging, youth, and more. Students will choose their own books to read, and they do not need to finish a book before coming to book club.

This class is taught in English.

Students will learn about contemporary and historical Asian and Asian American stories, and compare those stories to their own experiences. My hope is for students to build empathy, and for students of Asian or Asian American descent, confidence and acceptance in their own identities.

I have facilitated book clubs for readers of varying abilities. Reading Asian and Asian American authors was an essential part of developing my own identity as a Taiwanese American woman.

Students may read as much of their chosen books before class as they wish.

I will also post optional take-home assignments responding to that week's text.

Learners and their families are responsible for obtaining a copy of the assigned reading. Learners may purchase or borrow paper books, eBooks, or audiobooks.

45 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.

Please use your own discretion in deciding whether a book is appropriate for your child.
