Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 6
In this class, students will have the opportunity to learn about the remarkable life and enduring legacy of Yuri Kochiyama, a Japanese-American civil rights activist who fearlessly fought for the rights of marginalized (oppressed) communities in the United States. Kochiyama's commitment to social justice inspired many others to join the struggle for equality. She dedicated her life, empowering those who were most commonly oppressed. She fought for Asian Americans, African Americans, Latino Americans, Native Americans, and those apart of the muslim community who were discriminated against. Students will learn about Kochiyama's early life and her life as an activist. We will talk about her friendship with Malcolm X and how she became involved in the Civil rights movement as well as the Asian American Movement. We will talk about the Internment of Japanese Americans
during world war 2, and the civil rights movement.

By the end of class, students will have a deeper understanding of Yuri Kochiyama's life and her contributions to the social justice movements.

This class will be very informative and it also connects to my other African American classes. This lesson will be interactive, and each student will have an opportunity to share their thoughts and opinions. If you have any questions about the class or suggestions please send a message. This class could possibly go over 30 minutes, as I love to give all students the time speak if they chose to do so.

I was able to research, write essays, and give speeches about this topic throughout college. I was trained by professionals to understand history and the issues surrounding history. Most importantly, I will allow each student to express their thoughts and opinions about this topic. This will help them communicate and show what they have learned. It is very important to include all students. I have taught African and Asian American history for 3 years. I studied communications in colleges, which heavily focused on Ethnic and African American studies.
