Students will learn the basic elements of architectural drawings by designing their dream home. Over 4 weeks students will create a floor plan and 4 exterior elevations of the home they are living in. Often times as an architect, we do remodel projects and don't have an accurate set of plans for the existing house. So we must create As-built plans as a starting point for a remodel. Each student will do a sketch version of their floor plan and exterior elevations by measuring their existing house walls, windows, doors and other architectural features. They will then create accurate, drawn to scale, dimensioned plans. No special computer software is required as we will be doing the drawings on graph paper with pencils. We will be using Flipgrid for classroom interactions and assignment feedback. Students will need a free account. There will be live classes once a week. Immediatly after the live meetings I will post the videos and assignments for the next week. Students will have 1 week to watch the videos and complete the assignment. ---Each week I will introduce the assignment. I will explain what the drawing is and how it works. I will go over all the basic elements that need to be included in this drawing type, and how to measure their house to get them. I will explain how students can translate those measurements into their drawings. The video instructions will be broken down into small segments with corresponding assignments that will walk students through how to create each drawing. --Throughout the week, students will watch the videos, work on assignments and use FlipGrid to post questions and get feedback on ideas and challenges. The students will work on their own to create their drawings until the next live class, however, I will be available for questions and feedback each day. ---During the live meeting, each student will present their work to the class for constructive feedback from myself and other students. --Each student will have a few minutes to tell us about their drawing. They can ask questions and receive feedback and help from me as well as other students. --Each student is required to present their drawing. This is a crucial part of the process. It is a very important part of architectural school as well as real-world practice. The class will be positive and welcoming. There will be feedback, but I strive to make all students feel great about their work. ---Each student is required to provide positive and constructive feedback to other students. This is how we all learn together. (Flipgrid is a free educational coordination platform) Syllabus: Each week we will cover these basic questions: What is this drawing? What are the basic elements that will be on this drawing? What scale is it usually drawn at? What do the symbols mean? ---Week 1: Introduction to architectural plans. What plans are there? How are they used? What are the basic things to look for on any set of plans? What is an architectural scale? How to use it. ---Week 2: Taking measurements and creating a rough sketch. Students will measure their home and create a rough sketch of it. ---Week 3: Creating the final drawings- Students will convert their floor plan rough sketches into more hardline sketch with dimensions. ---Week 4: Creating the final drawings- Students will convert their exterior elevation rough sketches into more hardline sketches with dimensions.
Learning Goals
Students will gain a preliminary knowledge of how to use different drawing types to express how a building is designed and constructed. This will be a general working knowledge of how architectural plans are used to describe a building. Students will design their own house and the class will be fun and exploratory in nature. Students will leave this class with a basic set of architectural plans that they drew themselves. This is a fantastic introduction to architectural drawings for anyone interested in architecture.
Specific learning outcomes include:
-Knowing how to use an architectural scale, draw and measure scaled drawings.
-How to measure using a measuring table
-How to convert real measurements into scaled measurements
-How to read the symbols commonly used on architectural plans.
-Knowing the basic types of architectural drawings and how they are used to create an actual building.
-Learning how to present your ideas to others and receive constructive feedback.

Supply List
I know that getting supplies during this time can be tough. Ideally, each student should have the supplies listed below, but at a minimum, they will need: Pencil, eraser, tape measure and 1/4" graph paper. It isn't ideal, but you can even print it off here: https://www.waterproofpaper.com/graph-paper/graph-paper-quarter-inch.pdf If you can get these supplies, it will make it easier for your student: ____________________________________________ -An architectural scale -11 by 17 graph paper -Mechanical pencils- These are much better for drawing consistent lines on plans. Pencils that need to be sharpened will start out thin and get thick. This makes it harder to do crisp, easy to read drawings. -Eraser- I highly recommend using the white high-polimer erasers. They won't tear the paper as easily and also erase better. -Floor plan template at 1/4"=1'-0". For drawing furniture, plumbing fixtures and door swings. ***Optional but really fun- Eraser shield. _____________________________________________ All of these items are found on Amazon and or at a local art or drafting supply store. Included below are links to supplies on Amazon if you wish to purchase there. Cost varies based on where you buy them, but you should be able to get all the supplies for less than $25, and you will have a lot left over after the class. In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Teacher expertise and credentials
I have a degree in architecture and have worked in many architectural firms. I have helped design homes for celebrities as well as regular people, like my parents. I run my own architectural drafting and design company.
I'm a homeschool mom of three kids and have also run a homeschool enrichment program of 30 kids where we did group projects. I love engaging students and having a chance to develop in kids lifelong skills that will serve them in many areas of their life.
