Artificial Intelligence & Programming Level 1 Course (4-Session), Ages 10-14
What's included
4 live meetings
4 in-class hoursClass Experience
In this 4 session course, students will learn the hottest AI topics, including path planning, speech recognition, and more. They will also learn to code in Calypso, an AI programming framework. By coding a virtual robot to chase objects, plan paths to destinations, and solve mazes, students learn programming and computer science while learning about the behind-the-scenes AI technology in self-driving cars. In the second week, students will work on a project where they will identify a societal problem then code a demo to illustrate how AI can help solve this issue. By the end of the course, students will have completed their coding projects from start to finish. No prior experience required. This camp is best suited for students who may have had experience with Scratch but limited experience with Java, Python, etc. Learning Objectives Lesson 1: ● Code their first line in Calypso ● Code the virtual robot to pursue an object and observe path planning in real-time ● Learn about the first two "laws" in Calypso Lesson 2: ● Code multiple characters in addition to the robot ● Learn the other three laws in Calypso ● Code using indentation and pages to accomplish more complex behaviors Lesson 3: ● Make a maze for the robot to solve ● Code a complex project with multiple goals and destinations ● Come up with and pitch their positive AI project idea Lesson 4: ● Design and code their project, with help from the instructor if necessary ● Present the project to peers and family members! We keep class sizes small to ensure every student is fully engaged. This class has a minimum enrollment of 2 learners.
Learning Goals
Students will have an understanding of the Five Big Ideas in AI (Perception, Representation and Reasoning, Learning, Human-AI Interaction, Societal Impact) through hands-on implementation and experimentation. They will also build upon their computational thinking skills by learning to code in Calypso. In the second week, students will improve their project planning and presentation skills as they complete their project.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! ReadyAI on Outschool consists of many teachers who are enthusiastic about teaching programming and Artificial Intelligence. We believe that AI learning should be: fun, creative, collaborative, empathetic, ethical, and for everyone. We teach both classes that involve coding and unplugged classes and aim to engage students in meaningful discussions about AI and the future.
If you have a child who is curious about technology, programming and artificial intelligence, try one of our classes! See you in the classroom!
